Sister Faye Huelsmann didn’t mind being the center of attention this Friday evening at the Jubilee celebration commemorating her 50th anniversary as a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia.   The event, held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, brought together friends, relatives, and local professionals, with some visitors traveling hundreds of miles to honor Sister Faye.  Attendees perused a scrapbook of photos and watched an animated Power Point presentation outlining  those life events that brought her to co-found the Center for Enriched Communications in July of 1981 to assist pained and troubled families.

The counseling clientele grew rapidly as referrals came from other professional organizations and individuals.  The Center, now operating under the name “the Counseling & Education Center”, has moved four times as the clientele and number of counselors increased.  Its present location at 2708 Patterson is a former home, and counseling is held in individual rooms, lending a comfortable and familiar atmosphere to sessions.

Sister Faye entered the order of St. Joseph of Concordia at the age of 18.  Upon graduating from college she taught both elementary and secondary school, later entering the counseling profession.  Celebrating her 28th year as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Sister Faye holds a Master’s Degree in Child and Family Development, is a Certified Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and is a practitioner of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Sister Faye and co-founder Sister Pat Lewter continue to counsel at CEC, where the center has 10 counselors and offers counseling for families and individuals, anger management classes, classes for children who have witnessed violence, and counseling for caregivers.  CEC accepts some insurance and assesses client fees on a sliding scale, as service is the primary mission of the organization.
